最大甲長130cm、体重300kg。背甲に筋状の盛り上がりは見られず、鼻孔は円形である。チャールズ・ダーウィンが進化論の着想を得るきっかけのひとつとなった。

一般的に餌となる植物の多い場所にはドーム型が、少ないところには低木やサボテン等を食べるため背甲が反り返った種が生息するとされる。

The Galápagos tortoise is the largest living species of tortoise, reaching weights of over 400 kilograms and lengths of 1.8 meters.

It is among the longest lived of all vertebrates*脊椎動物. Life expectancy in the wild is over 100 years, and the oldest known individual is estimated to have reached at least 170 years of age.

シュノーケリングをしていた時1ｍくらいの亀がいて一瞬びっくりしたけど、ゆったりと泳いでいる姿は印象的だった。
