1976年北アフリカのスーダンで初めてこのウイルスが発見された。その後エボラ出血熱は突発的に発生し、感染したときの致死率は50～89％と非常に高い。患者の血液、分泌物*、排泄物**や、唾液などの飛沫***が感染源となる。
