今日のレッスン アマゾンアマゾン川は南米のブラジルとその周辺国のアマゾン熱帯雨林を流れ、世界最大の河川である。アマゾン川の本流の水の色はコーヒーのように茶褐色に濁っているが、きれいな清水のような水が流れている支流*tributaryもある。
アマゾン川の流域面積*basin areaは世界最大であり、水の量は世界の全河川の3分の2に当たる膨大な量である。アマゾン川流域には豊かで多様性に富んだ動植物が数多く見られる。魚類ではピラニア*piranhaや淡水*freshwater化したサメやエイ*rayなど2,000種類以上が発見されている。
大潮*spray tideの時に海水と川の流れがぶつかり合い、大きな波となって川を遡る現象が発生する。この現象をポロロッカという。
