今日のレッスン victim of thalidomide
Merica was born with asymmetrical-bilateral phocomelia. His left arm is 16 inches from shoulder to fingertip. His mother was given the experimental drug thalidomide in the late 1950s. Merica said the doctors didn’t connect his mother’s use of thalidomide with his condition.
サリドマイドは1957年以降、睡眠薬として販売されていた。しかし、妊婦がサリドマイドを服用した場合、奇形児が生まれる可能性が高いことが分かり、直ちに販売が中止された。
1964年サリドマイドがハンセン病患者に劇的に効くことが偶然確かめられ、その後研究が進められた。
